A well-defined belt progression and ranking system is crucial for your mixed martial arts (MMA) gym or dojo, serving as a key factor in member retention. Clear progress tracking is highly conducive for building commitment and long-term engagement with your martial arts gym. To efficiently manage this system, consider implementing MMA gym software like Zen Planner for advanced scheduling to simplify record-keeping and enhance your teaching focus. In this article, we’ll explore the challenges of integrating diverse martial arts into one sport and developing a well-structured and comprehensive belt progression and ranking system.

The Unique Challenge of Integrating Diverse Martial Arts in MMA

Because of its amalgamation of various martial arts disciplines, it’s inherently difficult to craft a cohesive ranking system for mixed martial arts (MMA) as one sport. Unlike traditional martial arts with established criteria, defining a standardized ranking system for MMA requires careful consideration. The intricate blend of striking, grappling, and ground fighting demands a nuanced approach to assess proficiency comprehensively. This complexity extends to determining eligibility, as the criteria for professional fighters must differ from the criteria for hobbyists.

To determine who qualifies for this integrated ranking system, you must develop an in-depth understanding of the diverse student base in your gym. In MMA, where outcomes can be as diverse as the techniques employed, the challenge lies in establishing criteria that fairly evaluates fighters across the spectrum.

The beauty of MMA lies in its multifaceted nature that gives room for victories through various avenues. But that very nature makes matters more confusing when considering whether a black belt can be earned through diverse means or if the criteria should be more exclusive to ensure a balance between accomplishment and accessibility in the belt system.

This intricate dance between inclusivity and merit is at the center of the challenge when it comes to developing a comprehensive MMA belt progression and ranking system.

The main concern of many people who debate what constitutes a student promotion always seems to come down to the practitioners who fear that the legitimacy of their belt levels and overall art will be watered down by teachers who are quick to promote students, due to the fact that with holding belts from students leads to a higher turnover rate for their academy. Unfortunately, this debate will likely never end due to numerous variables in different factors in student ability and the different standards held by the countless teachers across all martial arts.

Regardless of the different opinions on the matter, the unifying principle is that belts are meant to signify knowledge, competence in practice, and dedication to the art.

How to Rank Belts and Track Progress in MMA

While the IMMAF introduced a system in 2022, its global recognition is pending. Instead of fixating on ranking belts, focus on understanding your gym’s martial arts specialization and the progress standards for each discipline.

For widely used martial arts like BJJ, Muay Thai, and Judo, explore their specific belt ranking systems to guide your students’ progression.

  • Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) belt progression. BJJ features five belts for students aged 16 and older: white, blue, purple, brown, and black. Each belt has degrees, with specific skills and knowledge required for progression that include time, knowledge, behavior, and tournament performance.
  • Muay Thai Belt Ranking. Muay Thai traditionally lacks a belt ranking system, but organizations like the Kru Muay Thai Association — a nonprofit organization with a focus on teaching and grading Muay Thai and Muay Boran — introduced one. Take time to understand the color-coded armband system for students and the hierarchical ranking for Kru and consider integrating these into your MMA gym.
  • Judo Belt System. Judo employs kyū and dan grades represented by colored belts. Track progress from white to black belt, with specific requirements for each level, which represents a practitioner who attained that level of competence.

What to Measure in MMA Progression

While the debate continues regarding MMA’s need for a belt ranking system, we recommend you measure technical fighting skills, physical capabilities, attendance, and belt ranks to assess student progression. Maintain transparency with students regarding their skill and the progression of their abilities to avoid the pitfalls of rushed promotions.
