After you’ve checked in on your retention, marketing and finances, huddle up with your team to make sure everyone is on the same page regarding your gym’s vision and goals, and how each individual contributes to those goals. Take some time to identify successes in the year and recognize staff members that contributed to those wins.

On the other side, don’t be afraid to take ownership of the mistakes as well. It’s all how you frame them – consider terms like “opportunities for growth” or “lessons learned”. It’s not about dragging yourself or your team through the mud with failures, but gleaning all the lessons you possibly can from those failures. Running through this exercise on a regular basis will decrease the chances these mistakes will be repeated in the future.

Once everyone understands the goals of the business, set clear objectives for your staff and detail the measures you’ll use for success. Such measures might include class attendance or membership sales goals. It’s important to make sure each team member is clear on how their role and performance contributes to the success of the whole.

Another key factor to the success of your business relates to culture. If your members and staff thrive in your culture, they are more likely to stick around. Even if you feel like your gym has a strong culture, take a step back and ask yourself:

  • What are the characteristics of the community you trying to create?
  • Are you creating that community or are you falling short?
  • What can you do to improve and enhance your community?

After you consider these questions, ask your members as well. They may point out things that you aren’t aware of and will likely have ideas to strengthen the gym’s community.

Finally, as a business owner, take some time to review your vision for the business. What things going well and why? What’s not going so well and why? Expand your vision to next year or three years out. Set a goal for where you would like the business to be and create checkpoints along the way to make sure that you stay on the path to success.

Lastly, for good measure, it might be a good time to do a deep-clean of your space as well. It can be annoying and sometimes painful to do “spring cleaning”, but without a place for everything, and everything in its place, you may never know the potential lurking just below the surface.
